Emotional Map: Art Therapy & Documentary Filmmaking Course

Translate intangible love into a concrete visual story.

About the Course

Emotional Map: Art Therapy & Documentary Filmmaking Course was a one-year programme supported by Impact Incubator and the SIE Fund. The programme involved twenty-four students, with twelve participants each from the two partner schools: Concordia Lutheran School and Jockey Club Man Kwan Eduyoung College, along with three additional community participants.

The curriculum consisted of 3 art therapy group sessions and 6 sessions of documentary filmmaking workshop. In art therapy sessions, students explored the concept of the Five Love Languages; and in the documentary sessions, students learnt filmmaking techiniques, including narrative structure, visual film language, use of sound for storytelling. At last, through making their own film, students integrated their own love language in the film and explored their connection with the people, happenings, objects, and places around them.

About the Showcase

Emotional Map: Art Therapy & Documentary Filmmaking Course was a programme based on the Five Languages of Love proposed by the American counsellor, Gary Chapman. With sessions of art therapy group and documentary filmmaking, we encouraged students to explore their relationship with the people around them, create shared experience and memories, and ultimately improve their interpersonal relationships.

By understanding the Five Languages of Love, students reflected upon the ways they express and receive love, as well as others' ways. With their unique perspective, the students created their own "Emotional Map" documentary.

Mismatched expectations and inability to communicate through the same love language sometimes prevent young people from feeling the affection from their family and friends.

But when students learn what love language is and gain control over how to tell their own story, you will discover they can turn translate intangible love into a concrete visual story.
